Japan is pioneering a new approach to carbon tracking, with Kawasaki City launching a digital pilot programme to measure citizen-driven CO2 reductions. Backed by Fujitsu, ANA X, Toshiba Data, and local government, the initiative integrates data from mobility, purchasing, and environmental actions into a national database.

Participants use smartphone apps to track their carbon footprint, with insights displayed via Fujitsu’s Eco Potential platform. The project supports Japan’s 2050 carbon neutrality target and Kawasaki’s goal of cutting emissions by 50% by 2030. If successful, it could set the stage for standardised CO2 metrics, influencing future sustainability policies and carbon credit markets.
