Ireland is stepping up its green industry agenda with the launch of BioDirect 2.0, a cross-sector initiative aimed at embedding circular bioeconomy practices across key industries. Led by Munster Technological University and supported by InterTradeIreland’s Synergy Programme, the two-year project connects stakeholders from both sides of the border to drive low-carbon innovation.
Building on the success of the first BioDirect, which gathered over 200 participants from business, research, and policy, this new phase expands collaboration across agriculture, manufacturing, textiles, and construction. Its goal is to integrate circularity into product design, supply chains, and industrial processes—reducing waste, improving efficiency, and strengthening economic competitiveness.
The project unites a strong network including Ulster University, AgriTech Ireland, the ATIM Cluster, ClimateKIC, and Irish Manufacturing Research, along with several government departments. Eight industry and two policy roundtables will take place over the next two years, supported by innovation challenges and mentorship programmes to help participants scale sustainable technologies.
Project lead Stephen Barry-Hannon emphasised that the initiative focuses on commercial viability, not just environmental impact. “Sustainable solutions must be both environmentally sound and economically feasible,” he said, noting the aim to generate new revenue streams while lowering emissions.
Agriculture is expected to be an early beneficiary, with precision farming and waste valorisation emerging as cost-effective ways to cut emissions and improve yields. In manufacturing, the project aims to address resource constraints and green skills shortages that slow the adoption of sustainable production methods.
