Cuilcagh Lakelands UNESCO Global Geopark celebrated the completion of its 2026 Tourism Business Sustainability Training Programme last week as 11 businesses from across the region finished the 14-week initiative, the geopark announced.

According to Fermanagh & Omagh District Council, the programme represents the first of its kind on the island of Ireland, equipping businesses with knowledge and tools to strengthen environmental practices, enhance community impact and contribute to sustainable tourism across the region.

Councillor John Paul Feeley, chair of the Geopark Committee, said: "I commend each business for its dedication to learning and its clear commitment to environmental stewardship. By joining this network, you are becoming part of a group that is already recognised as a leader in sustainable and regenerative tourism."

Councillor Anthony Feely, vice chair of the Geopark Committee, added: "Through this cross-border collaboration between Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and Cavan County Council, Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark continues to demonstrate best practice in sustainable development."

The programme is funded by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Cavan County Council, Tourism NI and Fáilte Ireland, and delivered by The Tourism Space. The 14-week curriculum covered energy and water efficiency, waste reduction, biodiversity and nature protection, accessibility and inclusion, Leave No Trace principles, community engagement, and storytelling and collaborative marketing.

Maria McAlister, interim manager for NI Experience Brand Development at Tourism NI, commented: "We in Tourism NI are delighted to support this programme. Each business is leading by example and a beacon of inspiration. As the network here grows from strength to strength, so does our destination, quietly and meaningfully."

Businesses completing the programme will join the Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark Regenerative Tourism Business Network, a group of more than 40 businesses dedicated to advancing sustainable and regenerative tourism.
