Ireland's national postal service An Post has achieved a 50% reduction in carbon emissions against 2009 levels, reaching the milestone in September 2025, three months ahead of its revised 2025 deadline and five years ahead of the original 2030 target set in 2017.
As reported by Sustainability Online, the achievement came despite significant business growth, with parcel volumes rising 27% last year to 73 million items as An Post continued to service 2.5 million delivery points every working day across Ireland.
Transport electrification was central to the emissions reduction. More than half 55% of An Post's fleet is now powered by alternative fuels, with 575 new, larger electric vehicles deployed in the first half of 2026 alone. Across the group's property portfolio, 99% of buildings are now powered by green energy. Energy use at An Post's headquarters, The EXO in Dublin's North Wall, fell by 250 megawatt-hours last year following upgrades to building management systems.
David McRedmond, CEO of An Post, said: "An Post will continue to be a champion of sustainability whilst leading positive environmental change. It's vital that we are able to move ahead at pace with constructing the e-commerce and postal sorting and delivery infrastructure for the future."
Owen Keogh, Head of Sustainability at An Post, said: "Net zero demands progress with pace and precision. We will continue to drive positive change across our community of customers, suppliers and staff while maximising opportunities for growth in our e-commerce and financial services businesses."
An Post said it would continue to advance circular economy initiatives and green energy optimisation as it works toward net zero across its operations.
