Grant Thornton Ireland has received validation of its near-term and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), becoming one of the first professional services firms in Ireland to achieve SBTi validation under the Corporate Net Zero Standard.

Grant Thornton Ireland is a Dublin-headquartered professional services firm employing approximately 2,900 people across nine locations on the island of Ireland, the Isle of Man, Gibraltar and Bermuda, operating as part of a trans-Atlantic platform with Grant Thornton US established in 2025 with combined revenues of $2.7 billion and more than 50 offices. Its Irish practice provides audit, tax and advisory services to mid-market private and public sector clients, including a sustainability and ESG advisory practice advising clients on SBTi target-setting, CSRD compliance and decarbonisation strategy. The SBTi is a global body enabling businesses to set emissions reduction targets aligned with climate science to limit warming to 1.5°C.

The structural driver is the CSRD's mandatory science-based target disclosure requirements. The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, in force for large EU companies from January 2025 and extending to listed SMEs by 2026, requires entities to disclose whether their emissions reduction targets are science-based and aligned with recognised frameworks.

SBTi validation is the market-recognised standard that satisfies that requirement and that institutional investors, procurement teams and supply chain sustainability audit processes increasingly require. For a professional services firm selling SBTi advisory services to clients, the firm's own validation is a direct commercial credential rather than a separate reputational exercise.

The timing is also driven by SBTi's Version 2.0 transition. SBTi published its updated Corporate Net Zero Standard in June 2026, shifting from pure target-setting to mandatory transition planning. Companies achieving validation under Version 1.3.1 before V2.0 takes full effect in February 2028 retain current target flexibilities, making the validation window commercially valuable.

For the sector, Grant Thornton Ireland's SBTi validation sets a benchmark for professional services firms advising Irish mid-market businesses on sustainability compliance, demonstrating that the standard is achievable for service-sector organisations without capital-intensive decarbonisation requirements.
