Judges & Judging Processes

A distinguished panel of Judges will be been drawn from state, academic and private sectors to co-ordinate the Green Awards 2012 judging.

In addition to your 5 page submission, you will also be scored on the answers given to the Green Awards survey where applicable. The scoring split is 70:30 (5 page submission: Survey answers).

The process of adjudication is as follows:

  1. Your entry will be carefully scrutinised with the best submissions selected to go forward to the shortlist for each category.
  2. The shortlist of finalists will be published in the Irish Independent and also on the Awards website, www.greenawards.ie.
  3. Judges are divided into two panels to ensure any possible conflict is avoided, with each responsible for 11 categories.
  4. A panel of international judges will also be selected, with each responsible for 1 category.
  5. Entrants may be invited to an interview (either Face to Face or by teleconference) to answer any additional queries the judges may have.
  6. All judges will rank the finalists from first to last based on the relevant category criteria.
  7. Scores are then collected and collated, with the entrant receiving the highest overall score being declared the winner of that category.
  8. The winners will be announced at the Awards Gala Night in the Burlington Hotel on Thursday, April 19th at the Burlington Hotel, Dublin.

The judge's decision is final and no correspondence, telephone, email or communication of any kind will be entered into in relation to decisions reached.

duncan-stewart

Duncan Stewart

Duncan Stewart has always been very committed to environmental and heritage issues especially regarding the protection of Dublin’s architectural heritage. During his student years, this interest culminated in a number of protests. In 1969 and 1970, Duncan led a group of students who occupied seven old Georgian buildings on Hume street at Stevens Green for over 6 months in order to prevent them from being demolished to make way for a more modern office block.

After qualifying, as a young architect Duncan left Ireland to broaden his horizons - he worked in Chicago, NY, Vienna, and Amsterdam. He returned to Dublin at the age of 23 to set up a small architectural practice. That same year he started lecturing at the school of Architecture in Bolton Street DIT.

After the Oil crisis in 73 it became clear to Duncan that our buildings were relying too much on fossil fuels and creating far to much pollution excessive energy demand. He set about trying to make and design buildings that were energy efficient using solar and other renewable sources. He designed and built a number of solar houses and also used mainly wood as a sustainable material. This became the theme of his practice. Duncan has been Irelands leading environmental architect for the past ten years. He leads the debate in sustainability and has always been on the side of the householder when it comes to issues of consumer rights and quality in construction for the home buyer. People interested in building, buying or renovating homes can always learn something very valuable form Duncan through his following of diverse building stories in television programmes.
